The South African trade surplus narrowed to R14.1bn in April from a revised reading of R22.6bn in March. April’s print was lower than a consensus forecast of R17.2bn.

The monthly government budget balance moved further into a deficit in April, to -R64.6bn from -R13.1bn in March.
