Trade
The South African trade surplus widened to R24.8bn in March from R19.9bn (revised) in February. In contrast, consensus estimates predicted a lower figure of R14.9 billion.

Budget
The monthly government budget balance moved back into a deficit in March, to -R13.1bn from February’s R24.2bn surplus. Note that March often records a seasonal deterioration in the budget balance.
