Why does it matter

March’s lower-than-expected inflation print remains a welcome outcome for financially constrained consumers. As inflation falls past the lower end of the SARB’s target band (3-6%), the real repo rate (repo less inflation) has remained elevated, providing a strong argument for the SARB to cut interest rates at the upcoming 29 May MPC meeting.
